Served simply sliced with parmesan cheese or poached in red wine, this fragrant and delicious autumn treat is also surprisingly versatile.
Sample new varieties as you find them or pick up the popular Bartlett (also known as Williams), which is particularly good for cooking and is also the source of a strong pear brandy that can be used for desserts.
Select pears that are free of blemishes and mushy spots.
They will ripen at room temperature and should be stored in a cool, dry place.
